The South Africa trade fact sheet aims to enhance international trade advocacy of South African trade unions, particularly the campaign to uphold labour rights within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Drawing on national and international data sources, it provides a snapshot of international trade, focusing on revenue, imports, exports, and intra-Africa trade.
It also describes the country’s export processing zones, industrial policy, and labour migration.
South Africa’s intra-Africa trade is significantly low as its export to the rest of Africa was just about 17 percent of total export in 2022. Similarly, just about 9 percent of total imports came from the rest of Africa.
